Best Cybersecurity Software for Small Businesses

Compare five cybersecurity options for small businesses by endpoint coverage, management effort, pricing model, and need for managed response.

Direct answer

The best cybersecurity software for a small business depends less on the longest feature list than on who will operate it. Microsoft Defender for Business is the most natural starting point for Microsoft 365-centered companies. Bitdefender GravityZone Small Business Security is a focused endpoint option. Malwarebytes for Teams suits very small offices that want simpler protection without specialist administration. Sophos Endpoint is stronger when a company wants centralized controls or a path to managed detection and response. ESET PROTECT is worth evaluating for mixed-device environments and teams that want cloud-managed endpoint protection.

These are shortlist recommendations, not laboratory rankings. We reviewed official product, documentation, and pricing pages on August 7, 2026. We did not independently test malware detection, response time, or support quality.

How we evaluated the options

We used criteria a small business can validate during a pilot:

  • supported operating systems and device limits;
  • centralized policy and alert management;
  • ransomware, exploit, phishing, and endpoint response coverage;
  • installation and administration effort;
  • transparent price or quote model;
  • availability of managed monitoring when internal response is weak;
  • upgrade path without replacing the entire security stack.

No endpoint product replaces multifactor authentication, secure backups, patching, email controls, staff training, and an incident response plan. Start with our cybersecurity software evaluation guide to define those requirements.

1. Microsoft Defender for Business: best for Microsoft 365-centered teams

Microsoft documents Defender for Business for organizations with up to 300 users and up to five devices per licensed user. It covers Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android and includes endpoint detection and response, automated investigation and remediation, attack-surface reduction, and vulnerability management. A server add-on is available separately.

The fit is strongest when identities, email, files, and devices already sit inside Microsoft 365. That can reduce console sprawl, but it does not remove the need to configure policies and assign alert ownership.

Choose it when: the business already uses Microsoft 365 and wants endpoint security integrated with that environment.

Check before buying: server count, supported operating-system versions, who will review alerts, and whether Defender for Business is already included in a Microsoft 365 Business Premium subscription.

2. Bitdefender GravityZone: best focused endpoint shortlist

Bitdefender’s Small Business Security materials describe centrally managed protection against malware, ransomware, phishing, fileless attacks, and other endpoint threats. It is a sensible shortlist candidate when the company wants dedicated endpoint protection without selecting a wider productivity suite.

Choose it when: Windows and macOS endpoint protection is the main buying job and the team wants one security console.

Check before buying: the exact GravityZone edition, device types, mobile requirements, ransomware remediation coverage, and whether email, identity, or MDR layers require another product.

3. Malwarebytes for Teams: best for a very small office

Malwarebytes positions its Teams product for sole proprietors, boutiques, and small offices that do not have advanced IT skills. The official page includes malware, scam, ransomware, web, and VPN-related protection and sends organizations with more than 20 endpoints toward the ThreatDown business platform.

Choose it when: the company is small, has limited administration capacity, and needs a straightforward endpoint starting point.

Check before buying: whether the business needs centralized investigation, server protection, granular policy, audit records, or 24/7 response beyond the Teams product.

4. Sophos Endpoint: best path to managed response

Sophos documents endpoint protection for Windows, macOS, and Linux, managed through Sophos Central. Its small-business pages also offer managed detection and response for organizations that need outside analysts to monitor and respond around the clock.

That distinction matters. A small business that cannot investigate alerts may receive more practical value from a managed service than from buying a sophisticated EDR console nobody watches.

Choose it when: the company wants centralized endpoint controls and may need MDR.

Check before buying: quote terms, minimum commitment, server coverage, supported legacy systems, response scope, and which actions the managed team is authorized to take.

5. ESET PROTECT: best mixed-device candidate

ESET’s business platform is a relevant shortlist option for organizations that need cloud-managed endpoint protection across different operating systems. Buyers should compare its current editions carefully because endpoint protection, server security, encryption, email, cloud-app, and detection capabilities can sit in different bundles.

Choose it when: mixed devices and centralized administration are important.

Check before buying: the exact edition, covered endpoints and servers, mobile scope, detection and response capabilities, and local reseller terms.

A practical 14-day security pilot

  1. Inventory every user, endpoint, server, operating system, and privileged account.
  2. Define who receives alerts and the response deadline for critical events.
  3. Deploy to a controlled set of representative devices.
  4. Test policy deployment, device isolation, alert routing, reporting, and uninstall protection.
  5. Confirm backup recovery and multifactor authentication separately.
  6. Record false positives, administration time, unsupported devices, and escalation gaps.
  7. Review vendor answers using the vendor security review checklist .

Final selection guidance

Choose the product your team can operate consistently. Microsoft-heavy companies should begin with Defender for Business. Very small offices can compare Malwarebytes for Teams with Bitdefender. Teams wanting stronger centralized response should evaluate Sophos and its MDR path. Mixed-device businesses should include ESET. If nobody can own alerts, solve that operating gap before buying a more complex console.

Frequently asked questions

What cybersecurity software does a small business need?

Most small businesses need centrally managed endpoint protection, account and device controls, reliable backups, patching, and a documented response process. The exact product depends on device count, operating systems, Microsoft 365 use, and whether anyone can investigate alerts.

Is antivirus enough for a small business?

No. Antivirus is one layer. Businesses also need multifactor authentication, patching, backups, email and identity controls, least-privilege access, and an incident response path.

When should a small business use managed detection and response?

MDR is worth evaluating when no internal person can monitor alerts, investigate suspicious activity, or respond outside business hours.
